1. Saedi considers her eyebrows to be a “blight” on her appearance. Saedi only comes to this realization, however, when she begins school in America. Her mother and aunts had always praised her for her pale skin and light-colored body hair. Upon arrival in America, she realizes that compared to most of her classmates she has a lot of visible body hair, including a “unibrow.” Saedi also explains that Persians care most about how family and extended family perceive their appearance, and Saedi’s mother worries that their family will judge Saedi’s mother if she allows her to pluck her eyebrows early.
