Cemetery Boys Chapters 21-26 Summary & Analysis

Chapter 21 Summary

Yadriel and Julian head into the cemetery. It is decorated with colorful ofrendas, or altars, for the spirits, and strewn about with marigold petals. Everyone is dressed up and Yadriel spots his father looking for him. Julian promises to wait for him so they can all go to the old church. Yadriel goes to his family and gets changed.

Yadriel brings offerings to place on his mother’s ofrenda and then meets Maritza and Julian at the old church. Inside, Yadriel sets all of Julian’s favorite foods on an ofrenda they’ve made for him. They sprinkle it with marigold petals. Yadriel does not know what to say to Julian, but the other boy encourages him to just free him already. Yadriel tries to do so but it does not work. Instead, Julian’s spirit seizes again, his eyes rolling into the back of his head just like the last time he relived his death.

Chapter 22 Summary

Yadriel is panicked as he holds Julian’s spirit, as blood stains Julian’s shirt. Julian’s spirit disappears. Maritza rushes inside when she hears Yadriel shouting. The bells toll midnight and Maritza tells Yadriel that Miguel’s spirit did not return with the others.
