Daughters of the Dust (1991)

Julie Dash’s widely-beloved feature film about three generations of the Peazant family living on St. Simon’s Island was the first film directed by a Black woman to receive a wide theatrical release in the United States. Although the novel is a standalone narrative, it draws from many of the themes and characters in the film.
