Divergent Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Chicago 100 Years After Divergent

In this activity, students will assume the roles of sociologists studying the society of Divergent and present their learnings.

Imagine you are a sociologist living in Chicago, the setting for Divergent, 100 years after the events of the novel. You have been studying Tris’s society: the factions, the events, the people. Using evidence from the novel, develop a presentation or report about the society.

  • Why did the city split into factions?
  • How did the factions function independently?
  • How were the factions intertwined?
  • What can we learn from this way of structuring society?

Present your findings. Listen to your peers’ presentations. Then, write a letter to yourself about what you have learned about society and how you will use that knowledge as you continue to grow and participate in society.

Teaching Suggestion: Giving students the chance to brainstorm and/or work in pairs can increase interpersonal learning. To guide students, consider revisiting a scene or two as a class; you might discuss what the details reveal about the society and how these revelations connect to modern society.
