At lunch, Ja’nae reveals that she’s been using phone cards to call her mother every night after her grandparents have gone to sleep. She says that her mother is living in someone’s basement while she develops her practice of laying hands to heal sick people. Raspberry recognizes this practice from her time on the street and knows that it’s not something Ja’nae’s mother could make a living doing. Throughout Ja’nae’s story, Raspberry realizes that this is the most Ja’nae has ever shared about her mother.
