Pineapple Street Chapter 21-Epilogue Summary & Analysis

Chapter 21 Summary: “Darley”

Malcolm and Darley meet up with Cy Habib. They connect over their mutual passion for aviation. After their successful outing, Malcolm admits to Darley that the longer she keeps his unemployment a secret from her family, the more humiliated he feels about it. Malcolm believes that after a decade of marriage, he has proven his worth to the Stocktons and can handle any of their concerns. Darley reflects on her relationship with money. She recognizes that she is constantly hemmed in by her rarified social circles because being so extensively wealthy makes it difficult to find true friends. Darley has been burned by past friendships, in which people took advantage of her in order to gain access to her money. However, she also understands that she has contributed to upholding the status quo of the world of the wealthy, possibly to the detriment of Malcolm, who was never fully included. Malcolm and Darley tell her parents about his unemployment, but then a week later, Cy Habib arranges for him to take a highly paid job with Emirates Airlines.
