Chapter 13 Summary

The narrative flashes back to eight years ago. Amy is struggling with trigonometry and wishes Jade would study with her. The young girl appears in Amy’s bedroom, telling her that she’s going to fail the upcoming test. The girl says Amy will never go to college or medical school, that her life will be ruined. Amy’s mother calls her for dinner, and the girl disappears. Amy confesses to her mother that she’s worried about her test. Her mother offers to hire a tutor, but Amy knows they can’t afford one, so she refuses.

Chapter 14 Summary

Amy returns to the nurse’s station where Cameron is writing a detailed note on his interview with Spider-Dan. She pulls Dr. Beck aside and tells him about the noise in Seclusion One, expressing concern that Damon Sawyer escaped his restraints. Dr. Beck says it’s not possible, and that they’ll check on him in the morning. He turns his attention to Cameron, asking him to describe Spider-Dan’s symptoms, which he does quickly. Dr. Beck suggests Amy visit Spider-Dan too, but when she says she already spoke to Will, Dr. Beck explains Spider-Dan displays a classic case of schizophrenia, while Will’s is atypical because his symptoms appeared later in life.
